The specimen shown is one of a series of silver coins struck at the Philadelphia mint by order of king Kalakaua of Hawaii (r. 1874-91). Dimes, quarter dollars and dollars were also struck. The quantity produced was far in excess of what the islands could absorb and many were later melted, to the dismay of today's collectors. Hawaii was annexed by the United States in 1898 and the coins were demonetized tho they continued to circulate until the 1930's.
