Hawaii 1883 dime
The first specimen was lot 5730 in Goldberg sale 72 (Los Angeles, February 2013), where it sold for $161. The catalog description[2] noted, "Hawaii. 10 Cents, 1883. Kalakaua I. Head right. NGC graded EF-45." The specimen shown is one of a series of silver coins struck at the Philadelphia mint by order of king Kalakaua of Hawaii (r. 1874-91). Half dollars (KM 6), quarter dollars and dollars (KM 7) were also struck. The quantity produced was far in excess of what the islands could absorb and many were later melted, to the dismay of today's collectors. Hawaii was annexed by the United States in 1898 and the coins were demonetized tho they continued to circulate until the 1930's.
Recorded mintage: 250,000 plus 26 proofs.
Specification: 2.5 g, .835 silver, .067 troy oz ASW.
