Hawaii 1883 dollar
This specimen was lot 30915 in Heritage sale 3081 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $6,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "Hawaii: Kalakaua I Dollar 1883 MS63 NGC, San Francisco mint. Struck for circulation in the Kingdom of Hawaii. 500,000 examples of the type were originally produced, though most of these were subsequently melted down. Choice, with satiny argent luster underneath subtly interwoven metallic tones and slightly darker patination largely confined to the peripheries." The quantity produced was far in excess of what the islands could absorb and many were later melted, to the dismay of today's collectors. Hawaii was annexed by the United States in 1898 and the coins were demonetized tho they continued to circulate until the 1930's.
