Netherlands East Indies 1857 cent

Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71819

This specimen was lot 71819 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $100. The catalog description^[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. Kingdom of the Netherlands. Cent, 1857. Utrecht Mint. William III. NGC MS-62 Brown. This handsome survivors offers much originality with a bold strike and rich mottled patina with a decent amount of red that pops out when rotated in the light." This type was struck in large quantities 1855-60 and accompanied a half cent and 2½ cent. A very similar coin (KM 307.2) was struck for queen Wilhelmina 1896-1912.

Recorded mintage: 162,000,000 (equivalent to 777 metric tons of copper).
