Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71819

This specimen was lot 71819 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $100. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. Kingdom of the Netherlands. Cent, 1857. Utrecht Mint. William III. NGC MS-62 Brown. This handsome survivors offers much originality with a bold strike and rich mottled patina with a decent amount of red that pops out when rotated in the light." This type was struck in large quantities 1855-60 and accompanied a half cent and 2½ cent. A very similar coin (KM 307.2) was struck for queen Wilhelmina 1896-1912.

Recorded mintage: 162,000,000 (equivalent to 777 metric tons of copper).

Specification: 4.8 g, copper, 22 mm diameter.
