The first specimen was lot 70790 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, February 2020), where it sold for $204. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 4 Pence, 1872. London Mint. Victoria. ANACS MS-67. Approaching pristine with brilliant centers and edges that are adorned in blue and gold tone." The second specimen was lot 71440 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[2] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Maundy 4 Pence, 1872. London Mint. Victoria. ANACS MS-67. Approaching pristine with brilliant centers and edges that are adorned in blue and gold tone." By Victoria's reign, the groat, once the mainstay of late medieval times, had been superseded by the sixpence. It continues to be produced for the Maundy sets to the present day. This type was struck 1838-87 but none for circulation.
