This specimen was lot 1079 in Jean Elsen sale 162 (Brussels, June 2025), where it sold for €220 (about US$305 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Troisième République (1871-1940), Maillechort 5 centimes, 1938. Lindauer. Type avec étoile entre R et F. Rare. Petites taches. (France, Third Republic, 1871-1940, copper-nickel five centimes of 1938, by Lindauer, with a star between R and F. Rare, light stains, Extremely Fine.)"
This denomination was struck in copper-nickel (KM 875) and copper-nickel-zinc (KM 875a, shown here) in 1938. For some unknown reason ("On ignore la signification de cette étoile."[2]), a few of the latter were struck using a die with a star on the reverse; these are rare.
Recorded mintage: 21,614,383 in copper-nickel plus 26,330,247 (all varieties)[2].
Specification: 1.5 g, "maillechort" (67 Cu-15 Ni-18 Zn), 17 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by E. E. Lindauer (1869-1942).
Catalog reference: F.123/1 (star, m. unknown but rare); KM 875a/F.123A/2, Gad-171.
