This specimen is from a series struck 1938-39 during the last years of the French Third Republic. It superseded a similar coin struck in copper-nickel 1917-38 (KM 866a). The weight was also reduced from 4 g to 3 g. Besides being thinner, this issue has dots on either side of the date. Production was suspended with the outbreak of World War Two and resumed in 1941 with the alloy changed to zinc (KM 895/KM 896/KM 897).
Recorded mintage: 24,150,817 plus 17,063,334 of the previous copper-nickel type (KM 866a).
Specification: 3 g, copper-nickel, 21.3 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Emile Lindauer.
