Zeeland 1649 1/2 daalder

Schulman auction 379, lot 514

This specimen was lot 514 in Schulman auction 379 (Amsterdam, June 2024), where it sold for €80 (about US$103 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"ZEELAND Provincie 1580 - 1795. 1/2 Leeuwendaalder. 1649, Silver Type III. Ridder achter Hollands wapen naar rechts, mt. ♖ na omschrift. Kz. klimmende leeuw, daarboven jaartal. RRR. Uiterst zeldzaam jaartal. Geslagen op kort plaatje. Zeer fraai. (province of Zeeland, silver half lion daalder of 1649, type III. Obverse: knight behind Dutch arms facing right, tower mintmark; reverse: lion rampant, date above. Extremely rare date, struck on tight planchet, very fine.)"

The leeuwendaalder and its half are famous in the numismatic world as being some of the worst struck coins in history. Most of the provinces and several of the cities struck them from the 1570's until the end of the seventeenth century. This type was struck 1609, 1614-19, 1623-25, 1628-29, 1632-41 and 1645-53. While not rare in low grade, because of its crude fabric this half daalder is quite scarce in nice condition.
