This specimen was lot 562 in Jean Elsen sale 137 (Brussels, June 2018), where it sold for €1,600 (about US$2,227 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
" VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Philips IV (1621-1665), AV gouden kroon, 1642, Brugge. Vz/ Gebloemd kruis. Kz/ Gekroond wapenschild tussen twee gekroonde vuurijzers. Uiterst zeldzaam. Zeer Fraai. (county of Flanders, couronne d'or of 1642, Bruges mint. Obverse: floriate cross; reverse: crowned arms between two crowned jewels. Very rare, very fine.)"
This type was struck at Bruges 1627-28, 1631-32, 1640-42 and is rare. It was also issued from Tournai, Antwerp and Brussels in Brabant. It was superseded by the souverain d'or and double souverain d'or (Fr-226).
Reported Mintage: 15,000 for 1640-42.
