This specimen was lot 2298 in Stephen Album sale 43 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2022), where it sold for $114. The catalog description[1] noted, "PAPAL STATES: Pius IX, 1846-1870, AE centesimo, Rome, 1866 year XXI, a fantastic mint state example! PCGS graded MS66, BN, ex Joe Sedillot Collection." This type of 1866-68 is the only issue of this denomination. In 1866, the Papal states dropped the scudo and its subdivision the baiocco in favor of the lira used in the rest of Italy (one scudo = 5.375 lire). In 1870, French troops evacuated Rome and the Papal States were forcibly incorporated into the kingdom of Italy, ending the coinage. The Rome mint was taken over by the new regime and continues in operation to this day.
Recorded mintage: 500,000.
Specification: 1 g, copper.
