from the Stack's Bowers 2018 ANA sale, lot 40169
Colombia SB818-40169r.jpg

This specimen was lot 40169 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $3,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1776-JJ 2 Escudos. Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) mint. Carlos III (1759-1788). AU-55 (PCGS). Unlike the Restrepo listing for variety 61.11, this piece has a pellet between the letters of the JJ assayer mark. Boldly detailed on both sides and beautifully toned in orange yellow gold with reverse highlights of pastel rose and blue. A very popular date for American collectors, here in far above average condition. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins. Ex. Christie's Geneva sale of the Kurt Homme Collection, November 25-26, 1981, lot 862." This type was struck at Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) and Popayán 1772-84 and is probably the most common two escudos of colonial Latin America.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.901 fine gold, .196 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-12463, KM 49.1, Fr-39, Restrepo 61.11.
