This specimen was lot 71562 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Rupee, 1974-B. Bombay Mint. NGC PROOF-67. A SCARCE proof, the present example presenting a stunning reflective nature and impeccably struck details. Certain to be much demanded on account of the beauty and elusiveness of the piece." After independence in 1947-48, the British rupee was withdrawn and replaced by a note. One rupee coins were struck 1952, 1954, 1962, 1964, 1969 but never on a production basis. This type was struck for circulation 1970 only and for the proof sets of 1970-74. In 1982, US$1 = 9.3 rupees; today (July 2022), one US dollar = 79 rupees.
Recorded mintage: unknown but all proofs.
Specification: 10 g, nickel, 28 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 75.2.
