from Stack's Bowers 2016 ANA sale, lot 22600
I of Man SB816-22600r.jpg

This specimen was lot 22600 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $587.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "ISLE OF MAN. 1/2 Noble, 1984. NGC PROOF-70 ULTRA CAMEO. Struck in platinum. A beautiful cameo coin with dark hard mirror fields and frosty devices. Fully worthy of its perfect grade, being one of only twenty-four examples to attain it, and housed in an earlier non-EdgeView holder." For some unknown reason, this type is not listed in the SCWC, which does list the tenth noble (KM 137) and one noble (KM 110) but not the quarter or the half with this bust of the queen. The Isle of Man lies in the Irish Sea between Britain and Ireland and remains a British dependency. It is famous for motorcycle racing and tailless cats. Token coppers were issued for the island in the eighteenth century but large production did not commence until 1971. About 1980, the island fell under the domination of the Pobjoy Mint, which has minted and marketed dozens of NCLT commemoratives.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 7.78 g, 0.999 fine platinum.

Catalog reference: cf.Fr-B4; cf.KM-169.
