Sincona sale 88, lot 2

This specimen was lot 2 in Sincona sale 88 (Zurich, May 2024), where it sold for 1,800 CHF (about US$2,379 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"IRAN, Safavid Dynasty, Esma'il I. 907-930 AH (1501-1524). Heavy Ashrafi 929 AH (1523), Yazd Mint. Early 72 grain Ashrafi. Äusserst selten Extremely rare. NGC MS64. Purchased from M. Abgarians, Glendale, California, in 1987."

Wikipedia comments, "Ismail I (Persian: اسماعیل یکم, c.1487-1524) was the founder and first shah of Safavid Iran, ruling from 1501 until his death in 1524. His reign is often considered the beginning of modern Iranian history."
