This specimen was lot 630 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $145.20. The catalog description[1] noted, "MALAY ARCHIPELAGO, Colonial. Nederlands-Oost-Indië (Netherlands East Indies). William I. 1815-1840. AR 1/2 Gulden. Utrecht mint; muntmeestertekens: torch and winged caduceus. Y.D.C. Suermondt, mintmaster. Dated 1826. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 62. Medium gray patina over all surfaces. One year only type." The Dutch hold on the East Indies in the early nineteenth century was weak and the British captured Batavia more than once during the Napoleonic Wars. Dutch control was restored at the Congress of Vienna. In the 1820's, the Dutch had conquered Java, parts of Sumatra and the Moluccas and was steadily expanded to include all of what is now Indonesia by World War One. This type was struck 1826-27 and 1834 for the Dutch colony in Indonesia. It and the accompanying quarter gulden were the first silver coins struck by the kingdom of the Netherlands for use there.
