SB0123-43109r.jpg

This specimen was lot 43109 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. Kingdom of the Netherlands. 1/4 Gulden, 1827. Utrecht Mint; privy mark: torch. William I. NGC MS-64." The Dutch hold on the East Indies in the early nineteenth century was weak and the British captured Batavia more than once during the Napoleonic Wars. Dutch control was restored at the Congress of Vienna. In the 1820's, the Dutch had conquered Java, parts of Sumatra and the Moluccas and was steadily expanded to include all of what is now Indonesia by World War One. This type was struck 1826-27, 1834 and 1840 for the Dutch colony in Indonesia. It and the accompanying half gulden were the first silver coins struck by the kingdom of the Netherlands for use there.

Recorded mintage: 1,003,000.

Specification: 4.06 g, .568 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-301.1; Sch-624.
