Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 53598
SB823-53598r.jpg

This specimen was lot 53598 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Holy Roman Empire. 60 Kreuzer (Gulden -- Taler), 1565. Kuttenberg Mint. Maximilian II. NGC AU Details--Cleaned. From the Augustana Collection." This particular type is a very early gulden, and is a product of the Kuttenberg mint in Bohemia. Davenport does not list it in his catalog of thalers as it is too light. The guldenthaler would soon be shortened to gulden and its weight slide from five-sixths to about two-thirds of a thaler. Bohemia was not added to the Hapsburg dominions until 1526.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM MB172, Dav-44.
