This specimen was lot 42656 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $10,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "Very Rare Swedish Crown Featuring the Tetragrammaton, SWEDEN. "Interregum" Daler, "98" (1598). Stockholm Mint. Karl IX (as Regent). PCGS VF-35. Type I. A GREAT RARITY within the Swedish series, this example is set apart from the rest in that the coinage of this period does not bear the portrait of the monarch. In fact, this crown was struck under the future Karl IX, then the Duke of Södermanland, who would not become king until 1604--hence the name as an "interregnum" Daler. Pleasingly toned and detailed, with all design facets remaining clear, including the four letter Hebrew word for God (Jehovah), also known as the tetragrammaton. Just the second example of the date that this cataloger could trace in the marketplace in recent memory." Sigismund III was king of Poland 1587-1625 and king of Sweden 1592-99. His fanatical Catholicism was popular in Poland but less so in Lutheran Sweden and he was ousted by his uncle, who became Charles IX (r. 1604-11). This type was struck 1598-99.
