Stack's Bowers September 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 75709
SB923-75709r.jpg

This specimen was lot 75709 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. Ore, 1597. Stockholm Mint. Sigismund III. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, AU Details. Dove gray surfaces are warmed by a hint of sepia coloration while some deeper mauve gray coloration is also present on the obverse. Signs of flatness to the luster likely result for the designation, but overall appeal is strong because of a nearly full strike and generous remaining detail. Emanating from a seldom encountered issuance, this piece would be a welcome addition for many advanced Scandinavian cabinets." Wikipedia comments, "Sigismund was the son of King John III of Sweden and his first wife, Catherine Jagiellon, daughter of King Sigismund I of Poland. Elected monarch of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1587, he sought to unify Poland and Sweden under one Catholic kingdom, and when he succeeded his deceased father in 1592 the Polish–Swedish union was created. Opposition in Protestant Sweden caused a war against Sigismund headed by Sigismund's uncle Charles IX, who deposed him in 1599." This type was struck 1594-98. One daler was 32 öre or four mark.

Recorded mintage: unknown.
