Heritage sale 3029, lot 30961
Sweden 1568 16 ore rev H3029-30961.jpg

This specimen was lot 30961 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $822.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Eric XIV Klippe 16 Ore 1568, AU55 NGC. Lightly toned and fully original with considerable underlying mint luster. A highly attractive example and very scarce in this select grade." Johan III was the second son of Gustaf Vasa and was Duke of Finland from 1556-1563 when he was imprisoned for opposing his brother, Eric XIV. After the demise of Erik, Johan III became king in 1568 and ruled until his death in 1592. One mark was eight öre. This type was struck 1563-68 as Erik tried to debase his way out of bankruptcy.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: SM-49.
