This type of 1935-36 marked the death of president Hindenburg. It was replaced in 1936-39 by KM 94, which had a swastika on the reverse. Though the size of a half dollar, its higher fineness meant that it contained the same amount of silver as the larger five mark of the Weimar Republic such as the Goethe commemorative (Dav-974). This type was also minted at Berlin ("A"), Vienna ("B"), Munich ("D"), Muldenhutten ("E"), Freudenstadt ("G"), and Hamburg ("J").

Recorded mintage: 4,926,000 of KM 86 plus 1,732,000 of KM 94.

Specifications: 13.88 g, 0.900 fine silver, 29 mm diameter, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: KM 86.
