Russia 1801 polupoltinnik rev Heritage 3021-22539.jpg

This specimen was lot 22539 in Heritage sale 3021 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $3,525. The catalog description[1] noted, "Paul I silver Polupoltinnik (1/4 Rouble) 1801 CM-AИ, Inscription in square tablet / Four crowned, cruciform Russian P's, superb XF+. Fully struck, with gray toning and surfaces free of noticeable flaws. Rare in this exceptional condition. It would be very difficult to find a nicer example of this type." This rare type of 1801 is nearly the last polupoltinnik (quarter ruble) issued. The denomination was superseded by the twenty-five kopeks in 1827 (KM C159).

Recorded mintage: 60,000.

Specification: 5.18 g, 0.868 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Bit-77, Sev-2479, KM C98.1a.
