This specimen was lot 6846 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $763.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Papal States. 30 Paoli (Doppia d'Oro), 1786. Pius VI (1774-99). NGC AU-58. A pleasing example with a nice strike, loads of luster and some faint bands of orange peel tone. Quite attractive." This type was issued 1786-93 for Pius VI (1774-99). After striking ''zecchini'' fairly steadily 1738-84, the denomination was suddenly dropped in favor of a series of ''mezze doppie'' ([[Papal States 1787 1/2 doppia d'oro Fr-247|Fr-247]]), ''doppie'' (Fr-246) and ''due doppie'' (Fr-245). The type doesn't fit into the already chaotic papal coinage system nor does it match the doppie of her neighbors, such as Naples and Sardinia.
