The minting of copper ten réis began with in 1693 and continued steadily thru the eighteenth century. This specimen was struck at the Lisbon mint for Brazil in 1778-85. Many, including this one, were countermarked in 1809 to raise their value to twenty réis. Counterfeits are numerous but are collected alongside the genuine issues.
