This specimen was lot 41553 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $1,680. The catalog description[1] noted, "SCOTLAND. Ryal ("Sword Dollar"), 1567 (Revalued 1578). Edinburgh Mint. James VI. PCGS Genuine--Surfaces Smoothed, EF Details Gold Shield. First coinage with thistle countermark. Though the host has been somewhat smoothed as noted, this specimen is otherwise pleasantly toned with a great showcase for the countermark--applied in 1578 as a revaluation. Highly charming and alluring." Davenport lists this type for 1567-71 and the specimen shown in his catalog displays the countermark. The counterstamp raised the value from thirty shillings to thirty-six shillings and threepence.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
