Künker sale 293, lot 2207

This specimen was lot 2207 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €340 (about US$458 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEDEN, KÖNIGREICH, Karl XIII. 1809-1818. 1/6 Riksdaler 1818, Stockholm, auf seine Beisetzung. Winz. Schrötlingsfehler, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (kingdom of Sweden, Charles XIII, 1809-18, one-sixth riksdaler of 1818, Stockholm, on his funeral. Minor edge defect, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

Largesse referred to the coin thrown to the populace at major occasions such as coronations and funerals. In Sweden special types were produced which weren't officially coins but circulated extensively, probably because of a shortage of coinage of good silver. The SCWC does not mention any Swedish coinage for Sweden for 1818 except the riksdaler (Dav-349) and ducat.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.25 g, .691 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Ahlström 34 b.
