Sweden 1818 4 mark KMX-M59
This specimen was lot 42659 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. 4 Mark (1/3 Riksdaler), 1818. Stockholm Mint. Karl XIII. PCGS MS-62. Largesse money for the King's funeral in 1818. The only example of the type certified on either the NGC or PCGS population reports. This lovely minor medallic issue exhibits boldly struck devices with lustrous surfaces. A pleasing dove gray patina with richer coloration in the peripherals and slight iridescent sheen complements the handsome design. Vastly superior than normally encountered and should be considered VERY RARE in this state of preservation." Largesse referred to the coin thrown to the populace at major occasions such as coronations and funerals. In Sweden special types were produced which weren't officially coins but circulated extensively, probably because of a shortage of coinage of good silver. Several types (KMX-M57, -M58, -M59, KMX-M60 and -M61) were struck on this occasion and for the coronation of Karl XIV Johan.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
