Revision as of 14:27, 10 January 2025
This specimen was lot 30455 in Heritage sale 3037 (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $1,468.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic nickel Proof 20 Groszy 1923 PR67 Cameo NGC. A brilliant example featuring deeply-reflective surfaces and a light cameo contrast. From a reported mintage of just 10 pieces, this is an incredibly scarce specimen, and clearly one of the finest examples extant." This twenty groszy of 1923 was accompanied by one grosz, two grosze, five, ten and fifty groszy, all common in circulated condition. The proofs are rare. The grosz is descended from the German groschen which is in turn is cognate to the French gros, the Italian grosso and the English groat. Poland lost her independence in 1939, not to regain it until the collapse of Communism in 1989.
Recorded mintage: 150,000,000 plus 10 proofs.
Specification: 3 g, nickel, 20 mm diameter.
