France 1603Z quart ecu obv DSLR.jpg

This specimen was lot 1269 in Jean Elsen sale 142 (Brussels, September 2019), where it sold for €80 (about US$104 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Henri IV (1589-1610), AR quart d'écu du Dauphiné, 1603Z, Grenoble. D/ Ecu couronné, écartelé de France et Dauphiné, entre II-II. R/ Croix feuillue. Belle patine. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Henry IV, 1589-1610, silver quarter écu of Dauphiné of 1603, Grenoble mint. Obverse: crowned arms of France and Dauphiné divides "II-II"; reverse: floriate cross. Nice patina, Very Fine.)"

It was offered again as lot 1194 in Jean Elsen sale 159 (Brussels, June 2024), where it sold for €90. The Grenoble mint, in the province of Dauphiné north of Provence, was one of those backwater mints whose products today are generally rare. This type was struck 1601-05. Sombart reports a rare "1063" date error.

Recorded mintage: 32,105, the most common date.

Specification: 9.71 g, 0.917 fine silver, plain edge, this specimen 9,51 g.

Catalog reference: Sb 4702, Dupl-1236; Ci. 1518; Laf. 1092.
