Unlike the smaller denominations, which had no design change from their introduction in 1950 to their retirement in 2002, the two mark was used to commemorate various German dignitaries. This type honored statesman Konrad Adenauer (struck 1969-87). Others honored Theodor Heuss (1970-87), physicist Max Planck (KM 116, 1957-71), Kurt Schumacher (KM 149, 1979-93), Ludwig Erhard (1988-2000) and Franz Joseph Strauss (1990-2000). The Munich mint mark was "D".
Recorded mintage: 7,318,000 plus 5,203,000 of KM-116 (Max Planck).
Specification: 7 g, copper-nickel, 26.75 mm diameter, lettered edge.
Catalog reference: KM 124.
