Sincona sale 75, lot 154

This specimen was lot 154 in Sincona sale 75 (Zurich, May 2022), where it sold for 190,000 CHF (about US$230,622 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Grossbritannien | Königreich. James II. 1685-1688. 5 Guineas 1687, London. TERTIO. First laureate bust, with elephant and castle below. Sehr selten. NGC MS63. Prachtexemplar mit Prägeglanz und feiner Goldtönung. (kingdom of Great Britain, James II, 1685-88, five guineas of 1687, London mint, TERTIO edge, first bust, with elephant and castle below. Very rare, Cabinet piece with nice lustre and fine gold toning.)"

This type was struck 1687-88. There is a similar type (KM 460.1) struck during the same years without the elephant and castle added below the king's bust; this symbol marked gold obtained from Africa.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 41.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 41.71 g.

Catalog reference: KM 460.2, Spink 3398. Bull 312. Fr-293.
