Sincona sale 82, lot 1736

This specimen was lot 1736 in Sincona sale 82 (Zurich, May 2023), where it sold for 1,200 CHF (about US$1,606 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "George I. 1714-1727. 1/2 Guinea 1723, London. First laureate head. Selten (Rare). NGC XF Details. Leicht gereinigt (Lightly cleaned)." This type was struck 1715-24. While not rare, it is expensive in nice condition. The dates 1717 and 1718 appear the most often. A 1721 half guinea with an elephant and castle below the bust exists but is very rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a better date.

Specification: 4.17 g, 0.917 fine gold; this specimen 4.12 g.

Catalog reference: KM 541.1, Spink 3635, Bull 544 (R), Fr-329a.
