This coin was minted in Lima, Peru, in 1850. The striking of four escudos after independence was erratic; only the dates 1828, 1850 and 1853-55 are known. None are common. This specimen was lot 3567 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $2,990. The catalog description[1] noted, "1850 MB 4 escudos. Lima mint. AU-58 (NGC). Types as above. Medium yellow gold, a few light obverse scratches, rim nick atop obverse, good lustre. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.5 g, .875 fine gold, .380 troy oz AGW; this specimen: 13.41 grams, 29.10 mm diameter.
