from the Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale, lot 20213
France SB118-20213r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20213 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1722-B. Rouen Mint. Louis XV (1715-74). NGC AU-58. An écu de France struck over a 1718-C écu de France-Navarre during the minority of Louis XV. Gadoury notes that all known specimens of this date are restruck. Traces of the undertype are clear (the date and mint can be made out) but the second strike is clear. Lightly toned with much luster. Above average and attractive." This is an écu au grand écusson de France of the Rouen mint, struck while Louis XV was a minor. Droulers[2] notes the type as rather scarce but more available than the succeeding écu aux 8 L of 1724-25. The type was issued 1720-24.

Reported Mintage: unknown but all on "reformed" blanks.

Specification: 24.47 g, 0.917 fine silver, 38 mm diameter, lettered edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Dav-1328; KM-459.2; Gad-319; Dupl-1665; Ciani-2107; Dr/4 № 817, Dr/2 № 566; DFW-445.
