Utrecht 1609 rijksdaalder Dav-4836

This specimen was lot 34220 in Heritage sale 3098 (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $1,260. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Netherlands: Utrecht. Provincial Rijksdaalder 1609 MS64 NGC, Utrecht mint. A seldom-seen date of the perennial favorite Rijksdaalder series, usually encountered in significantly lesser tiers of preservation and with conditional qualifiers. Here we have a rare combination of date and appreciable condition, certified at the very peak of both grading service censuses, blessed with largely unblemished, icy surfaces and as deep a strike as you could reasonably expect from this series. Only a flan imperfection can be noted to the out[er] register, but a choice example nonetheless." This type was struck 1606-31, 1648, 1687-88 and in a modified form (Dav-4838) 1650-61, 1668, 1683-88, 1693-1700. It is roughly the same rarity as the prinsen rijksdaalders of Zeeland (Dav-4844) and Westfriesland (Dav-4842).
