Schulman sale 344, lot 161

This specimen was lot 161 in Schulman sale 344 (Amsterdam, March 2014), where it sold for €1,500 (about US$2,456 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Dubbele dukaat. 1789. Type IIIa. Staande ridder met zwaard en pijlenbundel tussen jaartal, grond onder de voeten. Kz. versierd vierkant met 5‒ regelige tekst MO: ORD: etc. Kabelrand. RR. Prachtig +. (double ducat of 1789, type IIIa. Standing knight with sword and bundle of arrows divides date, ground under feet; reverse: five line text on tablet. Reeded edge, rare, extremely fine.)"

This type was struck throughout the eighteenth century until 1794 but remains expensive.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 7 g, 0.986 fine gold, .221 troy oz AGW, this specimen 6.95 g.
