This specimen was part of lot 40624 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "IRELAND. 1/2 Crown, 1937. PCGS AU-55 Secure Holder. Low mintage of 40,000 struck for circulation. Lustrous with light friction." After winning independence from Great Britain after World War One, Ireland went thru a civil war before settling on a free state completely separate from Britain. This issue of 1937 is the key date for the type; only the 1943 is rarer. The Irish race horse depicted honors Irish agriculture.
Recorded mintage: 40,000.
Specification: 14.13 g, 0.750 fine silver, 32.3 mm diameter, designed by Percy Metcalfe.
Catalog reference: KM 8.
