from Jean Elsen sale 132, lot 1041

This specimen was lot 1041 in Jean Elsen sale 132 (Brussels, March 2017), where it sold for €1,600 (about US$2,027 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

Rare. Très Beau à Superbe. (principality of Transylvania, Stephen Bathory (1571-76), gold ducat of 1573, Hermannstadt mint. Obverse: St. Ladislaus standing, armored head to foot, holding a lance and an orb; reverse: madonna and Child seated on a crescent, mintmark below. Rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This specimen appears to be 1575, not 1573. Friedberg lists this type for 1572-76. The Hermannstadt mintmark was two crossed swords, crown above.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, .109 troy oz ASW, this specimen 3,52 g.

Catalog reference: Resch 16; Huszar 65; Fr-278.
