This specimen was lot 21937 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $2,530. The catalog description[1] noted, "Johann II Sigismund gold Ducat 1570, MS63 NGC, fully lustrous and bold, a wonderful grade for this early series. Very scarce type." The princes of Transylvania were sandwiched between the Ottoman Empire to the south and the Hapsburg dominions to the west and attempted to maintain independence from both. The Hapsburgs reconquered Hungary from the Turks in the 1680's and ended Transylvanian autonomy.
