Transylvania 1560 ducat Fr-265
This specimen was lot 6288 in Künker sale 336 (Osnabruck, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,570 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SIEBENBÜRGEN, FÜRSTEN, Johann II. Sigismund unter Vormundschaft seiner Mutter Isabella, 1556-1559. Dukat 1560 (Jahreszahl im Stempel aus 1559 geändert). GOLD. R Sehr schön. Erworben im europäischen Münzenhandel vor März 1971. (principality of Transylvania, John II Sigismund under the regency of his mother Isabella, 1556-59, ducat of 1560/59. Scarce, very fine.)
Das Wappen auf der Rückseite setzt sich wie folgt zusammen: Im 1. abermals in 4 Teile geteilten Feld der Zapolya'sche Wolf, das ungarische Kreuz, die ungarischen Streifen und ein steigendes Einhorn, im 2. Feld der polnische Adler, im 3. die Mailänder Schlange, im 4. die dalmatinischen Pantherköpfe. Isabella war die Tochter des Königs Sigismund von Polen, ihre Mutter war eine mailändische Prinzessin aus dem Hause Bona Sforza, daher das Wappen Polen/Mailand. (The coat of arms on the back is composed as follows: in the first quarter, again divided into 4 parts, the Zapolya wolf, the Hungarian cross, the Hungarian stripes and a rising unicorn, in the 2nd quarter the Polish eagle, in the third the Milanese snake, in the fourth the Dalmatian panther heads. Isabella was the daughter of King Sigismund of Poland, her mother was a Milanese princess from the house of Bona Sforza, hence the coat of arms of Poland and Milan.)"
This type was struck 1558-60 and is fairly common for a Transylvanian ducat.
