Bolivia 1777-PTS PR 2 reales

Sedwick Treasure Auction 35, lot 1107

This specimen was lot 1107 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 35 (Winter Park, FL, May 2024), where it sold for $570. The catalog description^[1] noted, "BOLIVIA, Potosí, bust 2 reales, Charles III, 1777 PR, NGC AU 55. Beautifully lustrous fields, the details well struck but with faint high-point wear and minimal hairlines (arguably still higher grade), rare this nice and second finest in NGC census behind a single AU 58." Harris^[2] notes that Potosi two reales of Charles III are the commonest mint, ahead of Mexico City. This type was struck 1773-89 without any design change. The SCWC does not so note, but the fineness was reduced from 0.903 to 0.896 in 1786.
