Heritage sale 3026, lot 25715

This specimen was lot 25715 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $822.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "James VI Sword Dollar 1570 With Thistle Countermark, with the revalu[a]tion mark of 1578, Fine 15 NGC, evenly worn with fully readable details. The thistle countermark increased the value of the host coin from 30 Shillings to 36 Shillings 9 Pence and as you might guess, knowing the thrifty nature of the Scots, not many coins were left without the countermark." Davenport lists this type for 1567-71 and the specimen shown in his catalog displays the countermark.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: S-5472, Dav-8463A.
