Künker sale 406, lot 3531

This specimen was lot 3531 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabruck, March 2024), where it sold for €725 (about US$951 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH, KÖNIGREICH, Louis XV, 1715-1774. Louis d'or aux lunettes 1733, D, Lyon. GOLD. Sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion Dr. Busso Peus Nachf. 353, Frankfurt/Main 1997, Nr. 1442. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, gold louis of the spectacles of 1733, Lyon mint. Very fine.)"

This type, introduced in 1726 as part of Cardinal Fleury's coinage reform, terminated the constant financial manipulations which had bedeviled the regency period. Its initial face value was 20 livres, which was raised to 24 livres in May 1726. This date obtains a slight premium over the 1733-A but is not listed as rare.

Recorded mintage: 24,338.

Specification: 8.16 g, 0.917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers, this specimen 8.12 g.

Catalog reference: Duplessy 1640; Dr/4 № 800, Dr/2 № 540, Fr-461; KM-489.13; Gad-340.
