In 1942, during the presidency of Getulio Vargas, the réis was dropped as a unit of currency after 400 years and the cruzeiro adopted. To mark the occasion, all new coins were released. This type was struck 1970 and 1975. It is worthless in all grades. It is a unit of the second cruzeiro of 1967-86 (= 1,000 first cruzeiros = 1,000 milréis). It was laster converted to stainless steel (KM 580b). Brazil endured currency reforms in 1942, 1967, 1986, 1989, 1990, 1993 and 1994. Wikipedia comments, "Combined with all previous currency changes in the country's history, this reform [of 1994] made the new real equal to 2.75 × 1018 (2.75 quintillion) of Brazil's original réis."
