Jean Elsen sale 143, lot 925

The first specimen was lot 448 in Jean Elsen sale 140 (Brussels, March 2019), where it sold for €760 (about US$1,012 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Charles Quint (1506-1555), AV écu d'or au soleil, 1554, Anvers. D/ Ecu couronné d'Autriche-Bourgogne, accosté de deux briquets. R/ Croix fleurdelisée, cantonnée de deux aigles et de deux tours. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Charles V, 1506-55, gold écu of the sunburst of 1554, Antwerp mint. Obverse: crowned arms of Austria-Burgundy between two briquets; reverse: floriate cross, cantonned with two eagles and two towers. Very Fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 925 in Jean Elsen sale 143 (Brussels, December 2019), where it sold for €420 (about US$548 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Charles Quint (1506-1555), AV écu d'or au soleil, 1554, Anvers. D/ Ecu couronné d'Autriche-Bourgogne, accosté de deux briquets. R/ Croix fleurdelisée, cantonnée de deux aigles et de deux tours. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Charles V, 1506-55, gold écu of 1554, Antwerp mint. Obverse: crowned arms of Austria-Burgundy divides two jewels; reverse: floriate cross, cantonned with two eagles and two towers. Very Fine)"

The couronne d'or was issued from Antwerp and Maastricht in Brabant 1542-55, as well as Flanders, Holland, Gelderland and elsewhere. Couronnes d'or were struck again in the Spanish Netherlands about 1615-42 but by then the northern provinces had seceded.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.31 g, .919 fine gold, the first specimen 3,35 g, the second specimen 3,33 g.
