Heritage sale 3107, lot 31448

Paderborn in 1547, between Lippe and Waldeck

This specimen was lot 31448 in Heritage sale 3107 (Chicago, May 2023), where it sold for $4,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States. Paderborn. Ferdinand II 1/4 Taler 1663 XF45 NGC, Neuhaus mint, A delightful portrait of the bishop graces this scarce issue from an important Westphalian bishopric. The reverse legend reads in Greek rather than Latin ("agreeably and firmly"). The only graded example at either service with moderate, yet even wear." All the coins of Munster and Paderborn are scarce. The town and the region were thoroughly devastated by the Thirty Years War and never recovered. This example realized seven times the catalog value. It is a one year type.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM 106.
