Paderborn 1656-PL thaler Dav-5692
This specimen was lot 179 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €3,800 (about US$4,930 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"PADERBORN, BISTUM, Dietrich Adolf von der Recke, 1650-1660. Reichstaler 1656, Paderborn. RR Hübsche Patina, kl. Schrötlingsfehler, fast vorzüglich. (Germany, bishopric of Paderborn, Dietrich Adolf of Recke, 1650-60, thaler of 1656, Paderborn mint. Very rare, handsome patina, minor planchet defects, about extremely fine.)"
All the coins of Munster and Paderborn are scarce. The town and the region were thoroughly devastated by the Thirty Years War and never recovered.
