Shown is a five sols de Strasbourg aux insignes (five sous of Strasbourg with insignia) struck at the Strasbourg mint in the last years of Louis XIV's reign. The type was struck 1703-04 for France solely at the Strasbourg mint (mintmark "BB") by a private contractor. Droulers separates this from the other cinq sols aux insignes (Dr/4 № 762, struck 1702-07) because of its lower weight and different obverse legend. This date is common. The SCWC lists this at .798 fine silver. The second specimen was part of lot 29055 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), which sold for $240. The catalog description[2] noted, "Louis XIV. Group of Four Minor Silver Coins, ...4) 5 Sols aux insignes 1703-BB AU, Strasbourg mint. Handsome, well-struck medium-gray example. From the Doug Robins Collection of Canadian Tokens."
Recorded mintage: unknown but common.
Specification: 1.55 g, .798 fine silver, plain edge, designed by Joseph Roëttiers.
Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 762BB, Dr/2 № 514, KM 337.4, Gad-108.
