This specimen was lot 23830 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $822.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Jose I gold 6400 Reis 1771-R, XF45 NGC. Fully original and pleasing for the grade with an interesting die bulge (as made) in the field behind Jose's head. From The RLM Collection, Part II." This type was struck 1751-77 and is among the more available colonial gold coins of Brazil.
Recorded mintage: 404,000.
Specification: 14.34 g, 0.917 fine gold, .422 troy oz AGW.
