This gold 1000 réis was minted at Lisbon and Rio without mintmark for Brazil during 1707-27, along with gold 2000 and 4000 réis. The commonest Brazilian gold coin of the early eighteenth century was the 4000 réis, called a "moidore" in English speaking countries. The specimen was lot 20678 in Heritage sale 3009 (Chicago, April 2010), where it sold for $1,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "Jose I gold 1000 Reis 1771, AU50 NGC, type with King's name as JOSEPHUS and title as PORT." For 1771, three varieties are listed; this one with "JOSEPHUS," another with "IOSEPHUS," and a third with "DOMINVS" on the reverse.

Recorded mintage: 23,000 (all varieties).

Specification: 2.01 g, 0.917 fine gold, .059 troy oz AGW.
